"This idea is not just about physical health. A cheerful heart can lead to a positive outlook on life and can keep us energetic and vibrant," writes Pastor R.O. Adeagbo, Ph.D., HFA Director, CAC Latunde Region, in the Christ Apostolic Church Hope For All newsletter. "Think of it like watering a healthy plant — happy heart nurtures both our minds and spirits."

"Just like how laughter is contagious, sharing joy can light up the day for others. Imagine walking into a room where friends are sharing happy moments and laughter — it's hard not to get caught up in that positive energy. We can be like light in each other's lives, helping us to counteract dark moments when they arise. Laughter not only boosts our outlook, but it can also improve our relationships," he writes, drawing on Proverbs 17:22.

Choosing joy should be intentional — rather than waiting for circumstances to be happy or expecting validation from people, we have the power to make circumstances within our hearts feel good, even on tough days. Encouragement matters — we should strive to uplift others; acts of affirmation can transform someone else's day. Facing challenges with a smile — life is full of challenges, but choosing how we respond can make the difference.

The importance of community — Proverbs 17:22 conveys a powerful truth about the connection between our hearts and well-being: the choice to nurture a cheerful heart significantly impacts not just how we feel but our lives and influences those around us. "Let's choose intentionally to cultivate joy within ourselves and, in doing so, become vessels of positivity — enriching our communities and the lives around us with laughter and love."
